“Work from home” role offers flexibility for single mum

23rd Jun 2022 Restart Scheme

Prior to facing the challenges of becoming a single mum in 2020, Charlotte* had worked in a full-time customer service retail role. Due to changing responsibilities when her children began a new school routine, Charlotte was no longer able to commit to full-time work and made the decision to leave her role.

Charlotte was introduced to Leah, her Remploy Job Coach, who wanted to help Charlotte overcome the restrictions that single parent childcare responsibilities can often entail. Leah set to work sourcing flexible roles that could fit around school drop-off times.

In addition to this challenge, Charlotte’s mental health had also taken a knock whilst out of work, so Leah referred her onto a mental health workshop to help her develop techniques to overcome anxiety. They also worked through her CV to ensure it was suitable for the roles she would be applying for, and Leah supported her with her job search.

Once Charlotte had completed the mental health workshop and updated her CV, Leah informed Charlotte of a Customer Service Representative job opportunity at Serco. This was a ‘work from home’ role, offering full flexibility around childcare and suited Charlotte’s previous experience of working in customer service. Charlotte felt she was ready and confident enough to be put forward for this role and was fully supported by Leah to ensure she was interview-ready by undertaking practice interviews.

Charlotte was successful and has started her new role as a Customer Services Representative within Serco, allowing her to manage her work schedule around her childcare responsibilities, and securing a role within a large organisation with good job security and future prospects.
