Skills Support for the Workforce

Code Change

Helen had naturally fallen into the HR role at Code Change with no formal training, as her previous role was business support for a specific division in the company. As Helen had no formal HR training, she wanted to gain more confidence in her advice and decisions.

Read on to find out how Skills Support for the Workforce supported Helen.

How SSW supported Helen

The Challenge

Helen is the Office Manager at Code Change, a software company which specialises in the automotive industry.

Helen initially found out about the Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) programme via a marketing call from HR Champions, one of Serco's network of expert training providers chosen to deliver the Skills Support for the Workforce programme. Helen spoke with Sophie at HR Champions and engaged in communications about possible training solutions for Code Change.

Helen had naturally fallen into the HR role in March 2020 but had no formal HR training, as her previous role was business support for a specific division in the company. Helen wanted to undertake training so she could gain more confidence in her advice and decisions.

The Training

Helen completed the ILM Level 3 course in Leadership and Management (specialising in HR Topics) and continued her learning onto the ILM Level 4 Leadership and Management course.

Both of these courses were delivered online via webinars and Helen was required to demonstrate her understanding and knowledge gained through the submission of assignments. Helen also participated in discussions and was able to hear different viewpoints from the other learners on the course which enabled her to learn just as much as she had from the trainer.

As SSW is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Helen was able to access the training at no cost to herself or the business.

The Outcome

Helen thoroughly enjoyed both courses and felt she had not lost anything by the training being conducted online. The training has enabled Helen to build on a basic foundation of knowledge she already had, ultimately supporting her goal to feel confident in her decision making and advice moving forward.

As a result of the training, Helen has been able to review Code Change's policies and procedures within the HR aspect, and now has the confidence to identify more policies that exist within the business which could also be formalised.

Helen is considering multiple avenues of training in the future, such as completing the ‘Mental Health First Aid’ training and further development in HR to help drive the business forward.
