Skills Support for the Workforce supported Paul John Group, a company which specialises in the Civil Engineering sector to access funded training to upskill their workforce and become more competitive.

Paul John Group was established in 1976 and specialises in the Civil Engineering sector offering services including groundworks, drainage schemes and infrastructure works. The company is committed to maintaining a high standard of health and safety, with a goal of zero accidents at all times. The company work in a competitive environment so required training to become more flexible.

How SSW supported Paul John Group

Construction Skills People, one of Serco’s trusted expert providers chosen to deliver the SSW programme, carried out a bespoke training needs analysis which identified the need for staff members to achieve the NVQ Level 2 Diploma in Construction Operations & Civil Engineering Services - General Construction.

As SSW is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Paul John Group could access the training at no cost to their business.

So far 9 employees have benefitted from the training and now hold industry-recognised CSCS cards, which are proof of the holder’s abilities and competence.

The training gave them a sense of achievement and a greater confidence in their abilities. As a result of having a fully qualified workforce, Paul John Group have gained a competitive advantage when tendering for new opportunities and projects.

Matt Todd from the Construction Skills People says:

“Paul John Group operatives undertook a qualification in Construction Operations at Level 2, and it’s fair to say that all nine candidates were apprehensive about re-engaging in education, however after what they described as a positive learning experience, all 9 passed their qualification with flying colours and have expressed an interest in progressing onto a Level 3 Supervisory qualification.”
