Skills Support for the Workforce

Premier Ship Models

Premier Ship Models is a corporate ship model building company based in Hertfordshire. The company has successfully delivered customised ship models to a global clientele spanning 80 countries over the last 20 years and use the latest technology such as 3D printing and virtual reality.

The company was facing a range of challenges including managing their online presence, recruitment, and increasing their supply chain to offer their clients maximum choice and keep up with demand.

How SSW helped

The company found out about the Skills Support for the Workforce programme (SSW) through the Hertfordshire Growth Hub. As SSW is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA), Premier Ship Models were able to access support at no cost to their business.

eVolve Your Future, one of Serco’s expert training providers chosen to deliver the SSW programme, carried out a training needs analysis with the company. This identified the training courses which would match the company’s current needs and future goals:

  • Level 1 Social Media for Business: 2 employees from the Digital team undertook this course to understand social media better and use this knowledge to market internationally.
  • Level 1 Microsoft Office / Excel: The new Finance Executive was enrolled onto this course to help them progress onto the Level 1 Book-keeping in Transactions and Controls course.

The company already recognised that the most important asset of any business are the staff and continual investment in staff is particularly important in a fast changing and challenging global business environment.

The team were fully committed to their training despite a very heavy workload and tight deadlines to achieve, especially during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The training has helped to bridge the team’s skills gaps, increase the competitiveness of the business and enhance staff morale. Company Director, Rashid Lalloo explains:

“It will support my plan to futureproof a sustainable workforce as I want to retain the good staff I have. I am always looking to gain that competitive edge and this training has supported us to improve our online business throughout COVID. We have a very motivated workforce however the training increased staff satisfaction and gave the staff more confidence in their work and has increased productivity.”

The Director has since signed up for LinkedIn training, and 2 new recruits are about to start training on Level 1 Project Management Course and Level 1 Book- Keeping in Transactions and Controls course.

The training has given Premier Ship Models the opportunity to become the market leader and enter awards such as the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
