Skills Support for the Workforce

Second Step

Second Step Housing Association supports individuals in Somerset and South Gloucestershire focusing on recovery and a better future. A priority of Second Step was to develop their team and efficiency through leadership training to support with the continuous expansion of its services.

How SSW helped

The Senior Recovery Coach at Second Step discovered Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) through Google and reached out to HR Champions, one of SSW’s expert training providers.  HR Champions completed a training needs analysis with the organisation to establish a bespoke training programme which would support their growth plans.

20 employees undertook leadership and management training ranging from level 2 to level 4 depending on the individuals’ job roles. The training was delivered online due to the pandemic, which comprised of webinars and encompassed tutor delivery led in breakout rooms with other delegates.

As the Skills Support for the Workforce programme is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, the training was accessed at no cost to the organisation.

All 20 individuals have achieved their qualifications and have gained additional responsibilities within their roles.

Amy, one of the employees who undertook the training, says:

“I particularly enjoyed the session on coaching, which is something I have struggled with in training sessions before, but the delivery of this training and the addition of useful models such as GROW, helped me to understand and practice my coaching skills more comfortably. I have very much enjoyed the training.”

Jada added:

“The course truly gave me a new way of looking at and approaching some areas of my work and I’ve already found myself reflecting back on some of the learning and trying to utilise it.”
