Restart Scheme resolves long term unemployment and anxiety for Ludlow jobseeker

12th Apr 2022 Restart Scheme

Not having paid employment for six years and with no qualifications behind her, Louise* was finding searching for a job daunting. But her biggest concern was her anxiety, which she worried could spiral quickly and affect her mental health.

Her Shropshire Council (Enable) Job Coach, Karen, decided the best course of action was to help Louise understand which doubts were causing her anxiety before she moved on to supplying pre-employability support. She used the ‘better off in work’ calculation to show Louise’s fears of being worse off in employment were unfounded and helped complete the necessary HM Revenue & Customs paperwork to overcome the fact she didn’t have an up-to-date P45.

Then, mindful of Louise’s fear of working in large organisations or taking on too much responsibility, Karen spent time building Louise’s confidence and reminding her she had recent voluntary sector experience and had earlier worked as a Housekeeper. Both agreed Louise would find working in a small business environment the least stressful, and that is what the job search focused on.

Together, they found a local Greek Taverna and Café seeking a part-time Kitchen Assistant which would fit Louise’ skillset and an interview was secured. But as this was her first interview in many years, Louise was nervous and really benefited from Louise’s coaching and guidance on interview techniques.

The approach worked and Louise is now a part time kitchen assistant, with general cleaning duties. She says:

"Everything happened so quickly, and I was in work far sooner than I imagined. My new job suits me which has helped a lot. I worried about starting work but I feel happier now.”
