Digital Careers Upskill Programme

Learning Centre uses on-demand 3D printing skills to create assistive tools

30th May 2023 Digital Careers Upskill Programme

Meadow View Learning Centre Special Educational Needs Schools & SEND Support - Witherslack Group provide young people with fully integrated therapeutic, education and care.

The team identified a need for creating hands-on teaching resources, in particular therapeutic services to produce tangible, calming objects, and to help them access a variety of activities.

When they learned about 3D printing training via the Digital Careers Upskill Programme, they enrolled ten members of staff onto the programme who completed 3D Printer Build and Computer Aided Design training courses with our training provider partner 3D 360 and are now able to integrate this learning within the Learning Centre.

They have been able to use 3D printing to create assistive tools, educational models, and resources to support young people with special educational needs.

When asked about feedback on the course, one learner said:

“I had an interest in 3D printing for several months prior to commencing my course and I jumped at the chance of learning about the process and how it can integrate well into my profession as a teacher. Upon completion of the course I continues to learn about additive manufacturing and pondered on how to best integrate this into my classroom…I produce teaching resources for classroom use, including models of historic structures, code wheels for ICT, compasses for geography and stencils for general use. Additionally, our integrated therapeutic services have been provided with a number of fidget toys, and card games such as Uno have easy to use cases and card holders for young people with dexterity difficulties”
