Daniel has already received a distinction for the first part of his Business Degree and is hoping to continue on to study at Level 7

Daniel is currently serving 13 years at HMP Dovegate and has been involved in the Therapeutic Community and Distance Learning. Daniel had already completed his Level 2 in Maths and English whilst at a previous prison and came to HMP Dovegate already enrolled on an Open University course. Daniel is studying a Business Degree, where he gained a Distinction for the end of last year’s study and is now around 50% of the way through his course.

Graduating next year, Daniel hopes that studying his degree will enable him to get better access to new employment opportunities upon release. Daniel is also hoping to enrol onto a master’s degree at the end of his studies in September 2024, with support from Serco in choosing an appropriate topic and university.

Daniel said:

“I feel education has given me a purpose while in prison, helping to turn a negative into a positive. The Distance Learning team are fantastic and are extremely supportive, going above and beyond for students and distance learners. I have a good relationship with the Serco staff – if they can, they help and support me in my studies. In turn, I’m willing to help them in any way I can, such as distributing coursework on the wings.”

With ongoing support, Daniel has recognised Serco’s assistance with both course and funding applications, as well as printing off education materials for learners.
