Beth's Confidence Soars with Support from DABD

The story

Beth was referred to DABD and the Inspiring Families programme by the London Borough Of Havering’s Early Help Team. Beth had been accessing early help support from LBH when the family became homeless.

Beth registered with the Inspiring Families programme wanting help to find secure employment, and support to help rebuild a career. She needed employment that would fit with the needs of her children and family life.

Beth met with her DABD adviser and discussed career options that would suit her circumstances and experience, and started looking for part-time employment in an office environment. Beth had not had an interview for over 10 years and needed support to build her job seeking, interview skills and self confidence.

Her adviser worked with Beth to prepare her return to employment, accessing one-to-one confidence building, mock interviews and support to complete application forms, which was required to support Beth's confidence due to dyslexia. Beth and her adviser explored various platforms of applying for employment and introduced her to a civil service website where she was successful in obtaining her first interview. The achievement of securing and attending this interview gave Beth the confidence to continue applying for admin based roles.

The adviser encouraged Beth to drop in and use resources whenever required to access preparation support to make a telephone call to a prospective employer or have an application form proof read. Beth was encouraged to attend group job club sessions.  Beth showed her commitment to returning to work, always attending one-to-one appointments and fortnightly job club sessions.

Beth's adviser supported her to produce and tailor CVs and covering letters, register on job sites and supervised her job search and application forms, all helping to build Beth's confidence.

The Results

Beth completed an application form for a local vacancy, was successful in being invited for an interview and was offered a work trial in a part-time administration position.

DABD’s adviser arranged for Beth to complete a Better off Calculation with DABD’s Welfare Benefits Adviser to ensure Beth’s household income will increase based on the hours and hourly rate of the position.

If the work trial is successful Beth will be starting paid employment soon.
