Skills Support for the Workforce

Improved Client relationships following skills training, Black Country

Omega Environmental Services Limited (OES) are a multi-disciplined specialist contractor who have the ability and expertise to provide a tailor-made, one-stop-shop service for their clients. OES are committed to long term client partnerships, a central feature of which is the provision of a high quality service for all its clients using a multi-disciplined, skill-based approach.

Following an intervention with Skills Support for the Workforce training provider, Construction Skills People, 35 members of staff undertook a Level 2 NVQ in removal of Hazourdous Waste (Licensed Asbestos) in Construction. Delivery of the training was flexible around the working schedules of the staff so that upskilling the workforce did not negatively impact the businesses work output. Omega has seen an immediate improvement in Client relatiosnhips following the training.

Company Director, Bobbie Caswell, talks about his experience of engaging with the Skills Support for the Workforce programme as an Employer:

35 members of staff completed a funded NVQ, Level 2 qualification

Business Background:

Omega Environmental Services Limited (OES) has established itself as a leading asbestos removal and remediation contractor in the UK. The company’s ethos is one of unrivalled quality of service and client satisfaction. OES holds a full asbestos removal license issued by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). We are also members of ACAD (Asbestos Control and Abatement Division).

With offices in London, Hertfordshire, Wales, The Midlands and North, OES can offer a nationwide service. The company is committed to delivering high quality and cost effective services delivered by our experienced management and operatives suitably trained and qualified in their specific market sectors together, where required, with strategic partners. The company employs 90 people.

How SSW supported the business:

It is OES's policy to be compliant in all business areas but also ensure that their staff are fully up to date with the latest health and safety recommendations. Our recent staff training programme was implemented by Construction Skills People, who deliver the training under Skills Support for the Workforce programme on behalf of Serco. The Construction Skills People (CSP) advised OES about the funded training, co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency. Constructions Skills People performed an analysis of our training needs. We became aware of CSP following an email marketing campaign and after reading reviews we were confident that they had the expertise and resources to deliver the training we required.

35 Omega employees undertook the following training course:

•    Level 2 NVQ - Removal of Hazardous Waste – Licensed Asbestos (Construction)

Flexible training to meet the Employer's needs:

The training delivery was arranged around the needs of our working schedules with the initial enrolment of our staff taking place on site and overall it did not impact on our work schedules. During the training programme our employees benefitted from learning about British values and the Prevent programme which opened their eyes to the different forms of radicalisation that exist in the UK today and how they can take steps to both recognise it and act against it.

Impact for the Employer:

The training has benefitted our relationships with our clients as we are able to ensure our staff achieve CSCS Cards, which are the construction industry’s skills competency scheme. CSCS Cards are seen by our customers as a legitimate way of proving our staff’s skills and knowledge of working safely on site and enable our business to be more competitive when tendering for new projects.

We would definitely utilise the ESF Skills Support for the Workforce programme again in the future and would recommend Construction Skills People to deliver that training.
