Skills Support for the Workforce

Project Solar UK Ltd

Project Solar UK Ltd, part of Project Better Energy, accessed funded management skills training through the Skills Support for the Workforce programme to empower their workforce and give their company a competitive edge.

Project Solar UK Ltd provides free solar advice to help individuals to take advantage of tax-free incentives. The company is part of the award-winning Project Better Energy’s group of companies who specialise in the renewable energy sector.

Energy is a niche sector and the business was finding recruitment a challenge, especially given their location. Another challenge was keeping staff motivated to achieve stretching targets. This meant staff retention and attracting new talent was a key focus for the business.

The business met with The Tess Group, one of Serco’s trusted training providers chosen to deliver the Skills Support for the Workforce programme, who carried out a bespoke training needs analysis which identified the need for developing management skills.

8 employees undertook 3 funded management skills training modules which included:

  • Manage conflict with a team
  • Chair and lead meetings
  • Contribute to the improvement of business performance

The training was interactive and the learners were split into groups to work around business needs and focus on specific role needs.

As a result of the training team morale and productivity have improved. Matt Weightman from Project Better Energy says:

“We want to continue to be an employer of choice and win future awards for our great work in this sector. Training and development helps to keep an empowered workforce and gain a competitive edge.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic the Tess Group have worked closely with their clients, learners and awarding bodies to ensure they could continue to support learners to progress and complete their programmes. They are continuing to support learners working remotely by providing telephone support for workbook completion and professional discussions for knowledge, and also running remote webinar sessions for training workshops.
