Skills Support for the Workforce

The Haven Hotel - Soma

Soma followed his brother to The Haven Hotel in Dorset and started working in the kitchen as a general assistant in the kitchen, mainly working on cold preparation and pot wash. Prior to this Soma did not have any kitchen experience or qualifications, other than a desire to keep his promise to his Grandmother to become the best chef.

How SSW supported Soma

As his knowledge improved, Soma moved to different areas of the kitchen, spending time shadowing other chefs. It was identified that Soma would benefit from training so he could take on more responsibilities.

Soma completed the Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Professional Cookery which was delivered by Locomotivation, one of the expert training providers chosen to carry out the Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) programme. As SSW is co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Soma was able to access the training at no cost to himself or the hotel.

When Soma started the training, he was very enthusiastic, but very shy within the kitchen environment. As he worked through the qualification his English improved and his understanding of the job role and its requirements developed a great deal.

The training was delivered in the workplace at The Haven Hotel and was tailored to meet Soma’s needs.

Following the training Soma has really developed in his job role and he is now seen as a key member of the team. Management trust him to work on his own and he has also taken on further responsibilities including working across all sections of the kitchen, being responsible for menu ideas and working within budgets set by the Head Chef.

Due to the SSW programme the hotel has been able to develop Soma and gain a qualified team member. This will help to raise the level of quality within the kitchen and the hotel.

Soma has also progressed onto further training and has recently completed the Level 3 Award in Hospitality Supervision and Leadership Principles.
