Restart Scheme

How a team approach helped Darren, who faces multiple challenges

30th Mar 2022 Restart Scheme

Darren was candid with Amy, his Seetec Pluss Job Coach, when he joined the Restart Scheme. Some sensitive and personal issues were making his job search and his life extremely difficult. Depression, alcoholism, mounting debt, and a terminally ill father seemed all-encompassing.

Given the breadth of his barriers, Amy decided a whole team approach underpinning his pre-employability work was appropriate. Every member of the team was involved to provide holistic support, including:

  • FINANCIAL: A Better off in work calculation meant Darren understood how working could improve his financial situation
  • HEALTH & WELLBEING: Darren was signposted to a local agency who specialise in alcohol dependency
  • SKILLS COACHING: Group and 1-2-1 sessions gave Darren a healthy focus and a space to recognise his strengths and self-worth
  • TRANSFERABLE SKILLS: Darren was mentored to identify and explain his skillsets and experiences that were transferable into other roles and sectors

Sadly, as Darren’s progression was becoming evident, his father passed away. During this time, he had to care for his mother, which put more pressure on him and led to heavier drinking as a coping mechanism. The Worcester team knew they had to rally fast, and his personal support plan was revised to include tools to improve his mental health, further skills training and financial support:

  • SELF-ESTEEM BUILDING: Mentored on how to focus on his end-goal and the financial and emotional rewards that entering employment would bring him
  • MANAGING MENTAL HEALTH: Darren learnt how to harness his artistic flare as a healthy coping mechanism. The team were wowed by his artwork at 1-2-1 sessions
  • EMPLOYABILITY TRAINING: By offering additional workshops and 1-2-1 sessions, the team noticed a visible increase in Darren’s level of confidence
  • FINANCIAL SUPPORT: Funded food vouchers were sourced to help Darren who was struggling to make ends meet

This second round of more intensive support was fruitful. Darren attended a trial shift with a local university as a Kitchen Porter. Feeling enthused following a successful day, he immediately visited the Worcester team to update them. Two days later, Darren was back in the office with news that he had been offered the position! To further reduce his stress at this important moment, the team helped Darren to complete pre-employment paperwork and sourced funding to cover the costs of his daily commute until his first pay day.

Darren continues to receive in-work support from the Employer Engagement team and is still engaging with the funded dependency service that he has been introduced to.

His primary Job Coach, Amy, concludes:

“Working with Darren reminded me why we do this job. His journey was tough. Through case conferencing, a team approach and communication with Worcester Jobcentre Plus, we have helped change Darren’s life for the better.

He is really enjoying the role and has reduced the amount he is drinking. He has recognised the successful steps he has made and is continuing to make great progress.”
