Restart Scheme

From Participant to Job Coach

23rd Oct 2023 Restart Scheme
Mo joined the Restart Scheme at Serco’s Cardiff office. Having been unemployed for a year, Mo was assigned Michael (Mike) Duncan as his Job Coach and from their initial meeting, Mike could see that Mo had lots of potential. Mo always presented himself well and it was clear that he aspired to have a rewarding career.

After working on his development opportunities and getting to know Mo and his skills better, Mike suggested to the Office Manager that Mo should apply for the open Administration Apprentice role within the Cardiff office. Undertaking one-to-one sessions with his Job Coach to prepare him for the interview, Mo was successful in the interview and started in the role this March.

Mo was great at the job but after just one month in post, it became clear to everyone in the office that Mo would be an amazing Job Coach, helping people who had faced similar challenges to himself change their lives through sustained employment. From his positive attitude to his enthusiasm, Mo’s skillset seemed to be a perfect fit to become a successful Job Coach. After it being suggested he apply for the role Mo was successful in his application and started in role this March.

Since moving into a Job Coach role, Mo is meeting and exceeding all his targets. He has maintained 100% customer satisfaction and maintains a green “RAG” rating for quality standards in all of his work. In July this year, only one month after starting in his Job Coach role, Mo achieved the highest number of jobs starts in the office. This was on par with a more experienced colleague in another Restart Scheme delivery office, where they jointly delivered the highest in Serco.

Mo’s journey is inspirational to everyone, but especially to other Restart Scheme Participants. They can relate to him as someone who has been in a similar position as them and that they too can start a new role and flourish. With Mo having started on the Restart Scheme, his experience helps with building a genuine and trusting relationship with the Participants he now supports – an essential part of being a Job Coach in being able to provide the best support.

One of Mo’s Colleagues said:
"Since Mo has started as a Job Coach in the Cardiff office, not only did he become a well-rounded Coach, but he also provides a plentiful supply of ideas and techniques to help other Job Coaches from simplifying processes to creating new workshops. We are certainly #sercoandproud of Mo's work and we wish him continued success in this new role.“
