Restart Scheme

Participant with Cerebral Palsy Gains Apprenticeship

11th Jan 2024 Restart Scheme

Morgan has Cerebral Palsy, is a wheelchair user and was desperate for an opportunity to work. Although he has completed some work experience, Morgan has never been in a full-time role. However, he did have some qualifications that he gained on different schemes and courses. Joining the Restart Scheme, Morgan was assigned Julie O’Hare from PeoplePlus as his Job Coach, to work towards getting him into suitable and sustainable work.

Morgan’s CV and cover letter was reworked, with the input and experience of Employability Skills Trainer, Brian. Brian also set up practice interviews to help develop Morgan’s interview skills and to showcase different interview techniques. Morgan also undertook course modules with LearningPlus, an online learning solution from PeoplePlus, to help him learn about transferable skills that he would need in work.
As a result of his hard work, Morgan was offered a Social Mobility apprenticeship at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). When offered the opportunity, Morgan was reluctant to accept as he knew that transport to the workplace would be difficult for him since he used a wheelchair. Addressing these concerns, the Restart Scheme worked with the DWP to overcome the travel issue and provided a suitable solution for Morgan.

“I was starting to lose all hope because I was struggling so much to find a suitable job for me. PeoplePlus and my Job Coach  in Shotton have both been amazing when it came to supporting me. I took an interview skills session with Brian where he would teach me interview techniques - with all this knowledge I now feel like I could ace any interviews in the future! I was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship with the DWP, and although I had travel concerns, the team have all been amazing at sorting out transport for me as I am a full-time wheelchair user. I’m now at the stage where my transport is sorted thanks to Caroline and this means that I will be starting my job very soon, I’ve learnt to never back down and that there is always a way around a problem!”
