Shanay joined the Restart Scheme at Starting Point Recruitment in December 2024, after being unemployed since May 2024 when her hairdressing apprenticeship ended. Nicole Evans was assigned as Shanay’s Job Coach.
Shanay was keen to return to work but lacked confidence in job searching and application processes. She also felt her CV needed improvement and struggled with interview confidence. Being out of work had affected her morale, causing feelings of stress and low mood. Shanay had long-term aspirations to work in dental nursing or hygiene but was also interested in retail and hospitality roles to enhance her customer service and interpersonal skills.
During her initial meetings, Shanay's CV was identified as a potential obstacle for her job search. Building confidence for job applications and successful interviews were also targeted as areas for development. It was agreed that Shanay would attend the 8-day Employability Gateway programme delivered by Starting Point Recruitment for support.
The Employability Gateway was facilitated by Gareth, an Employability & Skills Trainer. Shanay actively participated programme, which included sessions on job searching, application completion, interview preparation, communication skill enhancement and proactive behaviour. The final part of the programme included one-on-one mock interviews and supported job searching. Shanay received advice on how to improve her interview techniques.
Four weeks later, Shanay attended a second mock interview with Gareth to prepare for an interview at McDonald's the following day. She showed significant improvements from the first mock interview and had implemented the advice she received from the Restart Scheme.
Shanay was successful in her McDonald's interview and accepted the job offer, beginning work in March 2025. After securing the role, Shanay emailed Gareth to express her gratitude for his support and to share her good news. She showed a positive mindset and effectively applied the advice she received from her success coaches. Shanay is now looking forward to starting her career – Well done Shanay!
